About this Blog
The Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation is fairly unique as far as social science research institutes and population centers go. There are very few other centers that are doing social science data integration and dissemination on the scale of ISRDI. In fact, we’re sort of certain that there are no other centers at this scale, but we don’t want to presume.
With that unique scale comes some pretty unique IT requirements, at least within the social sciences. This affects everything from staffing to technology platforms. There are probably not a lot of other pop centers that need full-time HPC developers or UX Designers on staff, for example, or which have to juggle 5 billion person records.
At ISRDI IT we have a sizable staff of IT folks working on some pretty leading edge social science IT. And we’d like to share what we’re doing with our community and engage with others out there who are moving into this space with us. We’re sure we have a lot to learn from others out there, and we hope that we have something to contribute back to all of you who are also working in social science IT.
We also hope we have something to offer to the wider IT community. While we’ll never have “big data” volumes to equal the astrophysics or genomics communities, we do have incredibly complex, dirty data structures. We have to deal with data that was written down by a human 220 years ago! And we have some records with more than 3,000 fields of mixed datatypes. These characteristics bring their own challenges that make us envy the uniformity and simplicity of DNA sequences or telescope imagery. Hopefully this blog will show other IT folks out there that there is interesting and challenging work to be done here if you’re looking for a new opportunity.
Finally, writing is a great way to cement knowledge. By communicating ideas to others in written form, you also strengthen your own knowledge of the topic. We view this blog as a small part of our own learning and career development, and hope that the team will enjoy having this creative outlet for sharing and discussion ideas about the things they are working on.
So, with that, we invite you to enjoy the ISRDI IT Blog. We hope you find something interesting or useful to your work within this site, and that you stick around and enrich the conversation with your own ideas. Thanks for visiting!
